Imagine

Imagine how better we’d all be by Joel Libava

Imagine how our life in the United States would look like if:

AR-15 style rifles weren’t allowed to be built here or sold here.

Little kids didn’t need to learn and participate in evacuation, reverse evacuation, duck-cover-hold, and shelter-in-place drills.

Any politicians who refused to vote for gun safety laws including mandatory background checks, red flag warning legislation, age-appropriate gun ownership guidelines, and the complete ban of dangerous, semi-automatic AR-15 style rifles and handguns couldn’t get reelected.

There were commonsense annual monetary contribution limits placed on lobbyists, companies and individuals. Not per candidate. Per year.

All Dark* money was eliminated.

*According to OpenSecrets.org, “‘Dark money’ refers to spending meant to influence political outcomes where the source of the money is not disclosed.” The section of their website on Dark money is a real eye-opener.

News networks who purposely broadcasted false information were swiftly fined bigly sums of money.

Books weren’t banned.

People were free to decide who they were…and are.

Bible-thumping politicians stayed out of a woman’s business.

Bonus: if our politicians remembered, and if need be, were reminded of that whole “Separation of Church and State” thingy.

That Thingy From Wikipedia:

The first amendment to the US Constitution states ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.’ The two parts, known as the ‘establishment clause’ and the ‘free exercise clause” ‘respectively, form the textual basis for the Supreme Court’s interpretations of the ‘separation of church and state’ doctrine.”

It continues.

Three central concepts were derived from the 1st Amendment which became America’s doctrine for church-state separation: no coercion in religious matters, no expectation to support a religion against one’s will, and religious liberty encompasses all religions. In sum, citizens are free to embrace or reject a faith, and support for religion — financial or physical — must be voluntary, and all religions are equal in the eyes of the law with no special preference or favoritism.”

In a nutshell, “A strong separation of church and state is the shield that protects everyone’s right to live as themselves and believe as they choose — ensuring freedom without favor and equality without exception.”

Judges were just that, without political affiliation.

Conspiracy theories were quickly squashed with facts.

We talked to one another like we were all citizens of the greatest country on earth.

Can you imagine?
