The International Franchise Association Loves Trump’s Horrible Cabinet Pick For Labor Secretary And I Know Why

I guess it makes perfect sense that the leader of The International Franchise Association (IFA) supports President Trump’s pick, Andy Puzder, for Labor Secretary. After all, Puzder is the leader of a huge franchise organization. I guess if I was the head of a large dues-paying membership organization of franchisors, franchisees, and vendors, like the IFA, I would support Trump’s pick, too.

No I Wouldn’t.

Fact: Several articles point to Puzder’s anti-higher wage and anti-employees views.

Read this article from the Daily Kos has an article, too (With Puzder’s anti-abortion activities included at no charge)

There are dozens more.

Update, February 13th

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has prepared over 20 questions for Puzder.

She also wrote this, according to The L.A. Times:

Your company’s record of prolific labor law abuses and discrimination suits — the most of any major burger chain — gives me great pause given that as Labor Secretary you’d be charged with enforcing these very laws.”

The article states that Warren told Puzder that his very public comments over the past several years “reveals a sneering contempt for the workers in your stores and a vehement opposition to the laws you will be charged with enforcing.”

If Puzder doesn’t drop out before his hearing (which has been delayed several times) we’re all going to be witnesses of a legendary Senatorial beat-down.

And Yet

The International Franchise Association recently praised Puzder, calling his potential appointment an “exceptional choice.” Business Insider

There’s this, too from an IFA press release:

Andy would be an exceptional choice to lead the Labor Department and we applaud President-elect Trump for recognizing Andy’s business experience and policy acumen on so many issues impacting employers and employees in today’s economy.”

Paragraph 2, from the same press release on Puzder’s nomination:

Voters elected a job creator as President, it is only fitting that the Labor Department, the agency responsible for ensuring the nation’s labor policy is properly balanced, should be led by someone with a proven track record for creating jobs, growing a business and opening a pathway for people to create a successful career and even business ownership.”

Did I mention that until recently, Puzder was on the IFA’s Board Of Directors? (Puzder just resigned)

But there’s another reason why the IFA supports Puzder.

Because Franchising

The IFA supports President Trump’s pick for Labor Secretary because he’s from the franchise industry! Having someone from franchising in President Trump’s ear would be a huge win for the IFA, which just so happens to be a lobbying organization.

It doesn’t seem to matter that Puzder said his company had spent $20 million on labor lawsuits in the previous eight years. (Wow!)

From the Beverly Hills-Hollywood Chapter of the NAACP:

In 2004, CKE agreed to settle an overtime pay case in California for $9 million filed by former and current restaurant managers who said they were not paid for the extra hours they worked.

In 2011, a class action suit was filed, again in California, alleging that the company was failing to pay general managers for work-related mileage expenses they incurred while using personal vehicles to attend meetings, pick up supplies, or do restaurant banking.

In 2013, a class action suit was filed in California against CKE alleging violations of overtime laws for managers. The filing stated “CKE has required all of its general managers to be available by phone to both their subordinates and superiors 24 hours a day and seven days a week. This on-call availability is in addition to 47.5 hours per week that each general manager is required to work in the restaurant.”

Just In: Puzder May Bail (CNN)

President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to be labor secretary has voiced second thoughts in recent days, because of a relentless barrage of criticism from Democrats, labor unions and other liberal groups, a business ally and GOP sources tell CNN.

New Update:

Puzder dropped out on February 15th. He wasn’t going to have enough Republican votes to get confirmed.

Do The Right Thing

Why is it so difficult for some people or some organizations to do the right thing?

When news came out about Puzder’s history, why didn’t the IFA step up and put out something like this:

While we are enthusiastic about the prospect of a franchise executive (Andy Puzder) becoming a member of President Trump’s Cabinet, recent news reports about some of the things Puzder has allegedly said and done regarding labor are troubling. We are temporarily withdrawing our support until more information is revealed about Puzder’s employee-related history.”

Because Lobbying.

That’s why they love the guy.
